Today, I want to focus on the important stuff, bad pop music, more specifically, boy bands. One of the blogs I found today is written by Bobby Bones. He hosts the morning radio show that I listen to on my way to school everyday. I saw he kept a blog and decided to check it out, it was interesting so I looked at a few of his older entries and I stumbled upon this little jewel, Great boy bands. That's not an oxymoron. It was wonderful. Here's a totally normal grown man willing to admit he loves boy bands... Why can't I?!
So here's my confession: I enjoy boy bands.
So why did I
Oh New Kids on the Block, how I wanted to love you! Elementary school would have been so much easier had I owned those binders, folders, pencils, stickers, posters, the list goes on. Why? Why was I cursed with 2 older brothers?? I blame them! NKOTB was not cool! They were gay *gasp*. Not that I really knew what that meant back then, so don't judge me! I was never allowed to bask in the glory of bad pop music. I couldn't be bothered to like NKOTB because my brothers would not have approved and I wanted their approval so very badly. My 80s childhood was lacking, yes.. I know. Thanks Leonel and Juan.
Fast forward to TRL and *Nsync and Backstreet Boys and LFO and and 98 Degrees! High school. You would think I'd be stronger then? Nope! Secretly I just wanted to dance in front of airplanes and do elaborate dances with hats and what not. But I couldn't! It was unacceptable! Luckily I was able to secretly enjoy TRL on my own many a days. I didn't even want the binders, folders, pencils, stickers, posters, I just wanted to enjoy the music. Sigh. Then college. Well, I was never going to admit to liking boy bands in COLLEGE! Come on? That type of music is for kids! Plus, my freshman year roommate was obsessed with them and there were posters from floor to ceiling and I refused to like/appreciate any of it! In fact, *Nsync and Backstreet Boys started to annoy me. I wanted them gone from my room and my life! I was tired of them! Most of the time. What a misspent youth.
Case in point. I was listening to *Nsync just a few minutes ago and my brother Juan popped his head into the room and looked me straight in the eyes and said "What the hell are you listening to?!" My reply? "NOTHING!" He then shook his head and looked away. I'm sorry *Nsync, I've denied you yet again. My inner teenager couldn't take the pressure... I'm now listening to Depeche Mode and The Cure. Juan says it's "too late now."
Maybe I missed my chance? My opportunity to be a boy band fan is long gone. I'm almost 30, I think it's unacceptable now, right? Sigh. Maybe in my next life...
But just in case it's not too late.. here's a couple of my favorites:
and...
Yeahhhh, that's the stuff!
